Author:  Pamela Travers
Genre:  Fantasy
Setting: Time and Place (Past, Present, Future) Banks home, Cherry Tree Lane, in the past.
Character Descriptions: Introduce me to the main characters.  Tell me a little bit about each of them.  (Not what they do in the book.  Instead, describe them and their character to me.)
Mr. Banks is a workaholic.  He has no emotional understanding of his two children.  Mrs. Banks is self-centered.  Her energies are directed outside the home.  The Banks children are not being properly supervised, nurtured, or taught life lessons by either parent.  They act badly.  Mary Poppins is a vain, strict, proper, and magical nanny who has a softer side that comes out mainly around her friends, mainly Bert the Matchman.  He is a jack-of-all trades who is comfortable with Mary’s nature and magic.

Summary Paragraph: Help your child begin this summary paragraph with a general sweeping topic sentence highlighted in RED. This sentence should communicate the main idea or theme of the book. X - indent
The book, Mary Poppins, written by Pamela Travers, is a fantasy about a magical nanny who loves, guides, and heals a dysfunctional family.
Continue here with examples, highlights, or favorite parts that support the topic sentence. This may include the problem and solution of the book.  Finish the paragraph by communicating the conclusion of the book.  How does the story end?
Mr. Banks spends all his time and energy on his work and he treats his kids like little soldiers expecting them to follow his every command without any emotional considerations for the kids.  Mrs. Banks flutters around the home planning and organizing various events in the community.  Her work, outside the home, is very important, especially to her.  The Banks children are mischievous, angry, and desperately want the attention and affection of their parents.  They act so badly, they have run off every nanny hired to care for them, until they meet Mary Poppins.  Her particular brand of discipline and magical abilities enchant the children and with every magical adventure exposes and heals the Banks family until she is needed no longer.

What did you learn from this book? I learned that love, time, attention, hard work, and laughter are all needed in a happy family.
Would your recommend this book? Why or Why not? This can include an evaluation of the author.  In your opinion, did the author do a good job? Yes, I would recommend this book.  I think the author had a great idea to use a magical nanny to expose and heal the very real difficulties that many families face.  It was fun, entertaining, but also a very important story because every family needs to balance work, other responsibilities, and fun in the home.
