            (German realist novelist and essayist, b. Lübeck in a well-to-do family, l. Munich 1893-1933,  w. first as insurance agent, for magazine Simplicissimus then man of letters; Nobel Prize for literature 1929; exile to Switzeland under Nazism, 1938; then Princeton, USA, US citizen 1944; returned to Switzerland after the war, Goethe Prize 1949; d. Kilchberg, near Zürich)
